A Guide to Visiting Huanglong Scenic Area in Sichuan

Huanglong

As the morning mist still clings to the creases of Minshan Mountain, the pools in Huanglong Valley already shimmer. Hidden deep inside Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, this gem is stunning. Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area has created breathtaking natural masterpieces and a profound humanistic poem over billions of years. This is one of the treasures of Sichuan tourism.

I. Yaochi Pools

As you move upstream along the 3.6-kilometer Huanglong Valley, you will see more than 3,000 travertine pools in a row like jade pieces set between mountains. They vary in size and shape.  The large ones resemble the sky mirrors, which could be over a hundred people resting here; the small ones are like the colorful glaze buried in the soil. Their layered formation gives Huanglong its three-dimensional texture.

From a geological point of view, it is truly a wonder. The colorful pools are formed uniquely. Groundwater rich in calcium carbonate seeps through the cracks in the limestone, and after a long process of sedimentation, gradually forms solid travertine ridges. These ridges wrap around those beautiful pools, creating a remarkable natural spectacle.

The water is so transparent that you can barely detect it with the naked eyes. However, the moment it comes in contact with sunlight, it changes color to blue-green, pale yellow, and crimson purple. That is all because of the unbelievable synergy of optics and chemistry. When the sun shines on the surface of pools, it reflects an ethereal color.

II. Snow Mountain Canyon

Huanglong Scenic Area is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, including seven peaks that are above 5,000 meters high. Mount Xuebaoding, the tallest middle peak of Minshan, is 5,588 meters above sea level and almost touches heaven. The eternal unfrozen snow is like a sacred crown, shining with the light against the blue sky and white clouds.

Mount Xuebaoding is not only a geographical sign, but also a holy mountain for local Tibetans, which is covered by many ancient myths. It’s said that Mount Xuebaoding is the soul mountain of the Tibetan legendary hero King Gesar. The people think the white snow at its peak is the pure veil of protection of the gods.

Melted snow from its slopes trickles down and flows into active streams. These streams are similar to Huanglong’s veins. From the snow-capped peaks, they carry the pure glacier water, which flows down the entire length and brings the lifeblood to all creatures in Huanglong.

III. Secret Forest

Huanglong’s forest can be referred to as a green ocean, in which the forest coverage is very high. It contains over 1,500 higher plant species, including 11 first to third-level protected plant species of the country. With low-altitude broad-leaved forests and high-altitude coniferous forests, this vegetation strip can be a paradise for plant enthusiasts and botanists.

As you get into the forest, tall trees overshadow the sky. Sunlight filters through leaves and branches, casting golden patches. Fresh air has a scent of soil, flowers, and vegetation. Birds chirp in the trees, and squirrels leap between trees.

You might catch a glimpse of rare animals like giant pandas and golden monkeys here and there. Giant pandas are China’s national treasure. It is truly lucky to see them roaming and playing freely in their natural habitats within Huanglong Forest. Their pure faces create an atmosphere of cuteness. In the meantime, golden monkeys jump and swing back and forth on the branches, and their golden hairs bathe in the sun, like a group of forest elves.

IV. Ancient Temple Fair

The Huanglong Temple, built during the Ming Dynasty, has quietly stood for over 600 years among rivers and mountains. The Huanglongzhong and Huanglonghou Temple quietly coexist with Buddhist culture, providing evidence for the rich variety of cultures.

The architectural style of these temples is a fusion of Chinese and Tibetan styles. The white pagoda with prayer flags and the upturned eaves complement one another, presenting a unique charm. The murals in the temple are elegant, narrating the legend of Buddhism and Taoism. All in all, the murals are vivid history books, telling the stories of the past.
